Abortion Aftercare

If you recently had an abortion there are steps you can take to ensure you remain healthy and infection free. Knowing what to expect can be helpful. At the Boston Abortion Clinic your information is discreet and confidential, you can trust us to help you with any of your gynecological needs.

What to Expect

Cramping, bleeding and spotting may occur following an abortion, but your normal period should begin within 4 to 8 weeks. If you experience breast engorgement avoid hot water and heating pads, wear a sport bra or something tight fitting. Ice can also be helpful. Call the clinic for a counseling session if you experience distressing emotions that do not pass. It’s common to experience a vast range of emotions following an abortion. Use birth control if you do not want to get pregnant, as pregnancy can occur anytime after an abortion.

Aftercare Procedures

  • Each day following your abortion you should take your temperature to ensure you are not developing an infection. If you are running a fever you should call the clinic.
  • Take all the medicine you were prescribed. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions. Avoid alcohol, aspirin and illegal drugs as they could cause heavier bleeding.
  • Do not use tampons. Maxi pads are the best choice. If you are bleeding heavily call the clinic.
  • Showers are fine but do not take a bath or go swimming for 1-2 weeks or as specified by your doctor.
  • Do not have sex, use douches or insert anything into your vagina for 1-2 weeks or as specified by your doctor.
  • Do not exercise or lift over fifteen pounds for 1-2 weeks or as specified by your doctor.
  • Return to the clinic for your follow-up appointment.
