Abortions - First Trimester

The first step in determining which type of abortion is right for a first trimester pregnancy includes a sonogram or determining how many weeks pregnant the patient is. Once a medical professional determines the gestation period a medical abortion or surgical abortion can be completed. A first trimester abortion is completed within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy.

Abortion Services of Boston is your clinic in Boston for safe medical abortion procedures. Mifeprex was approved by the FDA in 2000. Misoprostal received final approval in 2016. Together they provide a safe option for women to terminate an early pregnancy.

On the first day of treatment, 200 mg of Mifeprex are administered by mouth. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours later, your healthcare provider at Abortion Services of Boston administers 800 mcg of Misoprostal in the cheek pouch. This is called administering medication buccally. After seven to fourteen days, patients will follow up with the healthcare providers at our clinic.

Different Options

In a medical abortion a medication is used to terminate the pregnancy. In a surgical abortion a physical procedure is done to eliminate the pregnancy.

A patient that is within seven to nine weeks gestation would have the option of taking the drug known as RU-486. During pregnancy there are hormones that are needed to maintain the pregnancy. The hormones are blocked by the drug causing the uterus to break down. A second drug called misoprostol is then taken to cause contractions thus emptying the uterus.

Methotrexate is another medical abortion option used. Women who are up to seven weeks gestation may take this drug which stops an egg during the implant period. The drug misoprostol is also given to cause the uterus to contract and expel the contents of the uterus.

Suction Aspiration

A procedure known as suction aspiration, suction curettage or vacuum aspiration is used from six to twelve weeks gestation. This is a surgical abortion.

Any questions regarding abortion drugs or procedures should be directed to a medical professional. After determining the gestation they can assist in finding the best drug or procedure for a patient.
