POST ABORTION CARE

Normal Recovery

After your abortion it is normal to experience:

- Cramping due to uterine contractions or due to passing blood clots *

- Emotional changes/mood swings

- Spotting and/or bleeding that is continuous but not routine

- Black, brown, or red blood clots

- Discharge from the nipples

- A slightly high fever (100 degrees or less)

- Ovulation in 4 to 8 weeks

- No bleeding at all

- Disappearance of pregnancy symptoms within 7 days

* To remedy cramping try using a hot water bottle or a heating pad. A deep massage on the abdominal area may also be helpful. Non-aspirin pain relievers can be taken as well.

Abnormal Recovery

After having an abortion the following are not commonly experienced. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important that you consult with a doctor, especially if they persist for more than a few days:

- Bleeding and/or spotting that lasts for more than 3 weeks

- Severe psychological and/or emotional distress

- Temperature above 100.4 degrees that does not decrease

- Extremely heavy bleeding that bleeds through 3 or more pads in a 3 hour time span

- Extremely painful cramping that hinders daily activities

- Tenderness in the abdomen area

- Absence of period for more than 3 months

- Existence of pregnancy symptoms after 2 weeks following your abortion

These symptoms often require medical assistance from the abortion clinic that performed the procedure. To get the help and guidance you need call us today! This way you are diagnosed and are able to receive proper care.

At Home Care

After your abortion there are some dos and don?ts to keep in mind for the 2 weeks following the procedure:

Dos

- Get a lot of rest

- Monitor your temperature

- Eat iron-rich foods and drink a lot of water if you are bleeding

- Use sanitary napkins as opposed to tampons; this decreases the chance of a UTI

- Avoid sexual activity

- Do not use douches and/or vaginal sprays

- Avoid swimming as it can introduce bacteria into the vagina

Don'ts

- No strenuous exercise for 2-5 days

- Avoid alcohol and drugs
